Printers which do work...

The iFelix unofficial Airport Extreme and Express Printer Compatibility List

This document was last updated on the 21 January, 2015

Question: Will this printer work with an Airport Extreme Base Station or an Airport Express?

You can ask a very simple question.

"Can I network this printer using a print server?"

If the answer is yes then you can connect it to the Airport Express (or AEBS) and it will probably work.

If the answer is no then it probably won't work when connected. It may though, but you can't be sure until you try it.

If the answer is yes (but with reservations) then generally you have to expect that not all functions will work across the network.

Printer manufacturers make (basically) two kinds of printers.

Personal printers designed to be connected to a single computer.

Network printers designed to be connected to a network.

Most network printers can also function as personal printers.

Most personal printers will not function as expected over a network as they are not designed to do so. Some (read cheap) personal printers use proprietary printer languages making it even more difficult for the printer to work across a network.

If your printer uses a standard printer language such as postscript or PCL then it has a much better chance of working across a network.
