Brother HL-1440 and USB Laser Printers and Airport Firmware 5.5 and 6.1

It is looking like that Airport Firmware 5.5 for the AEBS and 6.1 for the AX have stopped the Brother HL-1440 (and some other USB Laser Printers) from working correctly through the USB port of the AEBS or AX.

If AirPort Admin Utility no longer recognizes your laser printer connected via USB to your AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme after updating the firmware with the latest release, you can download and install the previous version.

Onlu users who have laser printers connected via USB that are not recognized in the AAU should consider this downgrade. All other users need to delete then recreate their printer queues.

Downgrading the AEBS to 5.4 or upgrading to 5.5.1 cures the problem. Download the firmware here.

Downgrading the AX or upgrading to 6.1.1 cures the problem. Download the firmware here.

Instructions:

The IP solution from Brother here does not work either.

The recommendation is to downgrade the AEBS firmware, or not to upgrade the firmware.
